Summer Cocktails for the Average Millennial

The Juice

With Summer right around the corner, we thought this would be a fun time for some original cocktails that are going to be easy and fun to make this summer!

After doing some research we found that though the low ABV trend is very present, Millennials and Gen Zers are still really pushing the limit on proofs. Higher alcohol by volume cocktails, that are sweet, are the move.

Why are they still trending towards higher alcohol by volume? Price! Prices of craft cocktails continue to skyrocket in many areas around the US. What was once $6 in Phoenix is now $10. What was once $10 in Los Angeles is now $16. Prices are going up, so millennials don’t want to purchase as many drinks when they go out on the town. So, the more alcohol in a single drink, the less drinks they’ll need to purchase the be ~in their feels~.

Another trend is bubbles. We know that canned cocktails and canend seltzers are very popular right now. But which will be the winner? If you follow the rule of thumb above, higher ABV, we’re looking at canned cocktails!

When hard seltzers came to the market, millennials had never heard of “malt beverage.” Even now, many of millennials believe that hard seltzers are made with vodka or a neutral spirit. We know this isn’t true, but we also know that the hard seltzers that are spirit based skyrocketed to the top of the line as favorite seltzers (such as High Noons) for their higher ABV and continually low calories.

So Millennials want to have their cake and eat it too. And through this information, we’ve created recipes of what we believe will be the perfect summer cocktails!

Skinny Mojito

Low Calorie, high alcohol content is what millennials are looking for here. They want bubbles and they want it to taste sweet. The mojito has always been a friend of this, especially with the availability of sugar free sweeteners.

So here’s our recipe:

  • 6 muddled mint leaves
  • 1.5oz Rum
  • 1oz stevia or sugar free sweetener syrup
  • 1/2oz lime juice
  • Top with soda water.

Total cal: 98 cal

Total ABV: 8.5%

Spicy Margarita

Margaritas are super in and they’re not going anywhere. With tequila being the lowest calorie spirit, it’s a huge hit amongst millennials. Add a little spice and they turn your world upside down! Tajin is the new man in town–bye-bye salt!

  • 2oz tequila
  • 1oz fresh squeezed tangerine juice.
  • 1oz lime juice
  • 1/2oz lemon juice
  • 1oz simple syrup
  • Muddle 4 slices of jalapeño

Total cal: 119 cal

Total ABV: 14%

Aperol Spritz

As spiritzers become popular, Aperol has continually been there. People are attempting to venture out from their standard cocktail and this is definitely a great cocktail to have. This one you might think would have a slightly lower ABV because it is a wine based spritzer; but the sheer volume of the cocktail (more ounces in your glass) may make you want to keep it in your back pocket.

  • 1oz Aperol
  • 1/2oz lemon juice
  • 4oz Prosecco
  • 2oz soda water

Total cal: 117 cal

Total ABV: 11%

Watermelon Paloma

Like we said in the past, Tequila is IN! So here’s a fun twist on your regular Paloma that will surely get your tastebuds excited.

  • Muddle 2 small slices of watermelon (1/2inx1/2 roughly each)
  • 2oz tequila
  • 1/2oz lime juice
  • 2oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 4oz soda water

Total Cal: 100

Total ABV: 9.4%

We hope you try some of these at home or at your favorite local spot this summer! And for businesses looking to understand the millennial market a little better, we hope this was insightful!

Cheers.
